installing the server breaks wintab drivers for pressure sensitivity

I own a Surface Pro 4 which comes with a pressure sensitive touchscreen and a pen. Some programs, such as One Note, work out of the box. For many others, especially open source ones, you need to install "wintab" drivers to get pressure sensitivity; e.g. Gimp, Krita, MyPaint.
After installing the server, regardless of whether the server was running or not, I completely lost all pressure sensitivity for all programs that use the wintab drivers. Uninstalling the server fixed the problem.
I'm on a Surface Pro 4, up to date Windows 10 machine. I'm afraid I lost the exact server version, but it was simply the latest mid-December.
To clarify, this issue is not critical to me but it's a real pity because I was developing a remote for Gimp while exploring the optimal way to paint on my tablet.
